Last night, Danai was honored at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts 2017 Gala along with fellow actor and alum Andre Holland. Danai was presented with the Big Apple Award for Artistic Achievement.

Gurira, who graduated in 2004, flew in for the gala, as she is currently filming Marvel’s Black Panther in Atlanta. “I’m just very thankful I made it here,” she told The Hollywood Reporter upon arrival. “My employers were very kind to help me get out in time to make it to this and to go back to shoot again tomorrow morning. It was a close call, but they got me here.” Source: THR

“It is an astounding honor to receive this award,” said Danai Gurira, Tisch alumna and actress, The Walking Dead. “Tisch is my artistic home – being there always felt intrinsically right. It is a place of growth and nurturing. I am a Tisch grad and proud of it for life.” Gurira also shared invaluable advice with current Tisch students on how to grow as actors. Source: NYU|Tisch
